City Of Denmark

Denmark was first established in 1837 as a turnout on the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company line. It was named Graham’s Turnout for Captain Zachariah G. Graham. The city later got its current name from B. A. Denmark, who was a railroad official.  One of the town’s early landmarks was the Denmark Hotel, built in 1893. Denmark, SC is the home of Voorhees College, a predominantly black institution that was founded in 1897, and Denmark Technical College, which evolved from a trade school established in 1948.

The Denmark, South Carolina Dogwood Festival, a family-friendly event that was started in 1985, takes place once a year in April. The festival is a historical fixture in the town, reflecting its identity, with even the water tower adorned with dogwood blossoms to commemorate the event. The festival benefits the community by drawing visitors and celebrating Denmark’s small-town charm and cultural heritage.
